Ketermaya's Syrian Refugee Kids
CHARITY PROJECT
A self-initiated project to help support the education of Syrian refugee kids in the Lebanese camp of Ketermaya. As president of the Rotary club of Islington, Highgate and Muswell Hill, 2016/17, I led the club on this project and teamed up with the local club Rotary Club of Chouf in Lebanon and the sister club Rotary Club of Dorn in Holland.
The idea behind the project started when I paid a visit to Lebanon in December 2015. I was touched by the number of refugee kids begging on the streets of Beirut and realised that education is the best tool for these kids to be able to get over their poverty and that the lack of it limits any future opportunities they may have, making them an easy target for manipulation.
I produced and directed a video and distributed it on social media networks, which helped better illustrate the situation of the kids living in the camp of Ketermaya, and started a crowdfunding campaign. Then with the Rotary club of Islington, Highgate and Muswell Hill and the Whittington hospital I held a charity quiz night. This raised 6000$ that were used to buy schooling items, educational games, sports items, shoes and jackets for 78 kids.
